| OldCovenant | NewCovenant |
It is a new translation which seeks to state clearly andaccurately the meaning of the original texts in words and forms that arewidely accepted by people who use English as a language. It attempts toset forth the Biblical content and message in a standard, everyday, naturalform of English.
The basic text used for the Old Testament was the MasoreticText in the third edition of Biblica Hebraica. Other ancient versions(Greek, Syraic, Latin) were also used at times. The basic text used forthe New Testament was The Greek New Testament, although other Greekmanuscripts were also used.
The first task was to understand correctly the meaningof the original. The next task was to express that meaning in a mannerand a form easily understood by readers. Certain features as hours of theday and measures are given in modern equivalents.
The Tetragrammaton is translated as LORD, in capitals.Where "Adonai" is followed by "Yahweh", the renderingis Sovereign Lord.
Early drafts were reviewed by prominent theologians andBiblical scholars. Drafts were also sent to English-speaking Bible societies. The final approval of the text was given by American Bible Society's Boardof Managers upon recommendation of its Translations Department Committee.
There is an introduction and an outline at the beginning of each book.

In the beginning, when God created the universe, the earth wasformless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed intotal darkness, and the power of God was moving over the water.
Before the world was created, the Word already existed;he was with God, and he was the same as God. From the very beginning theWord was with God. Through him God made all things; not one thing in allcreation was made without him. |
