In 1944, the Catholic Bible Association of America wasrequested to produce a completely new translation of the Bible from theoriginal languages and to present the sense of Biblical text as accuratelyas possible. The Old Testament was first published in a series of fourvolumes. The New Testament was completed in 1970, resulting in the NewAmerican Bible. It has widespread use by American Catholic people in publicworship.

Further advances in Biblical scholarship and identificationof pastoral needs brought about a revision of the New Testament in 1986.This fulfilled the need for greater consistency of vocabulary, sensitivityto the need of inclusive language in favor of women, greater attentionto public proclamation in sacred liturgy, and provision of more abundantand upgraded explanatory material. Scholars from other Christian churchescollaborated in preparing this version.

There is an introduction and, usually, anoutline at the beginning of each book. It has four imprimaturs.
