The idea of a readable, but accurate, version of the Biblecame to Gleason and Kathryn Ledyard as they worked in the Canadian Arcticwith Eskimos who were starting to learn English. It was hoped that sucha version would be useful wherever English is used as a second language.
For the most part, the words in this limited vocabularyedition have only one meaning. Difficult Biblical words were broken downinto simple, meaningful phrases. The use of today's street language andof paraphrasing were not considered. The wording and beauty of older versionswere kept in many places.
The first copies of the Scriptures were considered tobe perfect and without error. Because of language changes and the translationfrom one language to another, no version can claim the same perfection.

In the beginning God made from nothing the heavens andthe earth. The earth was an empty waste and darkness was over the deepwaters. And the Spirit of God was moving over the top of the waters.
The Word (Christ) was in the beginning. The Word waswith God. The Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. He made allthings. Nothing was made without Him making it. |
