The translators, the committees, and the editors soughtto maintain the lyrical quality of the King JamesVersion while being sensitive to the late twentieth century English idiomand adhering faithfully to the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts. Whereobsolescence and other reading difficulties existed, present-day vocabulary, punctuation, and grammar were integrated. Words representing ancient objectswhich have no modern substitutes were retained. A special feature is theconformity to the thought flow of the 1611 Bible. King James spelling ofuntranslated words was retained, but made uniform throughout. Standarddoctrinal and theological terms were retained. Pronouns and verb endings nolonger in use were replaced by modern words. Pronouns referring to God werecapitalized. Frequent use of "and" was limited., and, where theoriginal language permitted, replaced by other words. The format was designedto enhance vividness and devotional quality of the Scriptures.
The text used for the Old Testament was the 1967/1977Stuttgart edition of Biblia Hebraica. There was supplementary useof the 1524/1525 Bomberg edition of Biblia Hebraica, Septuagint,Latin Vulgate, and Dead Sea Scrolls.
The New Testament was based on the traditional text ofGreek-speaking churches, first published in 1516 and later referred toas the Received Text. It is the fifth revision of the New Testamenttranslated from specific Greek texts.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of thedeep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was withGod, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All thingswere made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. |
