David Instone-Brewer, a Baptist minister, is a research fellow at Tyndale House, Cambridge, England. He seeks "to understand the meaning of the New Testament teaching on divorce and remarriage as it would have been understood by its original readers." After an examination of the biblical evidence in its historical and cultural context, he concludes that Jesus and Paul con-demned divorce that did not have valid grounds and discouraged divorce even for valid grounds. They affirmed the Old Testament grounds for di-vorce—adultery, neglect, or abuse; and they con-demned remarriage after an invalid divorce, but not after a valid divorce. He concludes with some practical suggestions for Christians today.
